CAMP PROGRAM
World Explorers at Summer Friends Camp transforms the
campus of Media-Providence Friends School into a “community cultural center”.
Within a relaxed, safe, accepting environment, children aged 3 to 9 are immersed
in two major world cultures during two four-week sessions.
Campers
explore each region through encounters with its music, art, dance, food,
geography, history, ecosystems and language. Artists-in-residence visit to
share talents and work on special projects with campers. On-site programs are
complimented by field trips to museums, nature centers, zoos, theater
performances and other local events. Each four-week session is capped by an art
and performance fair in which campers share what they have learned with the
community. These exhibitions include original artwork, as well as singing,
dancing and dramatic performances.
During the 2008 summer sessions, Summer Friends campers
will experience the cultures of the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. On any
given day, campers might find
themselves
creating their own kilim weavings, learning to belly dance, turning a classroom
into a dessert oasis, trying their hand at a Djembe drum, imprinting a clay tile
with traditional Islamic geometric patterns, or listening to Arabian folk
tales. In addition, our partnership with the University of Pennsylvania’s
Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology gives us unique access to visiting
experts in anthropology and archaeology as well as real artifacts that give
campers a hands-on experience.
FACILITIES
World Explorers at Summer Friends enjoys complete use of
MPFS’ newly
renovated and air conditioned facilities, including state-of-the-art computer
