Physical Education is an important component of cultivating the whole child at MPFS and consists of a wide variety of developmentally and instructionally appropriate programs that promote healthy lifestyles, physical fitness and wholesome values.
Emphasis is placed on personal growth rather than on comparison to others. Cooperation, sportsmanship, effort, self-discipline, as well as respect and kindness towards others and self are stressed in all physical activities. The program also helps to develop skills in following directions and accepting others and their abilities. Most importantly, it's FUN!
All students in Preschool through 4th grade have PE twice weekly. In addition, an after school Intramural Program is offered for boys and girls in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades, and may include such activities as Basketball, Pillow Polo, Scooter Polo, and Soccer.
The Middle School PE program consists of elective sport activities that encompass competitive, cooperative and lifestyle sports. Each trimester, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders may choose from among two different sports. Competitive options include Soccer, Basketball, and Running and offer the excitement of after school competitions against other independent schools one or two days per week during the season. Cooperative options are played with classmates during PE class and vary from year to year. In the past, cooperative sports alternatives have included Ultimate Frisbee, Archery, Yoga, Soccer, Volleyball and Bowling.
A number of community resources are utilized to enhance our athletic program: Sproul Lanes Bowling Center, the Middletown Archery Club Center, Cherry Street field (which is used for soccer, Flag Football and Frisbee and all outdoor intramural activities) and Rose Tree Park for other activities like Capture the Flag and scavenger hunts, as well as the school's own playground and gymnasium.
Media-Providence Friends School will continue distance learning by teaching virtually at least until the current order from Governor Wolf is lifted. Please visit our COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Updates page at mpfs.org/covid-19 for updates and helpful resources for both parents and kids!
The MPFS Admissions Office remains open and continues to accept applications for the 2020-21 school year.
